Web Surfer challenges how we engage with the internet. The project fantasises how the online world can be a liberating space for expression. Birthed from self-introspective mark-making, a virtual world is proposed.
The word glitch holds multiple definitions- its current colloquial identity refers to the word as a mistake or rupture- something that needs to be fixed or is considered a mistake. But in German the word glitch originates from the word Gildan which signifies slipperiness. In contrast, the word glitch is also defined as a fissure of space that breaks open a digital realm to explore, imagine and create personal and connected narratives built upon unique histories and ancestral memories (Nixon). In Russel's manifesto about ‘Glitch Feminism’ “glitch is celebrated as a vehicle of refusal” against the conventionalities that colonisation has made upon gender. In this way, the word encapsulates the idea of how an identity is forever a moving thing that is affected by its contextual narrative, bouncing back and forth through time and space, from being to being.
This collection depicts a visual narrative of how technology and the internet play an important role as hosts for queer and BIPOC communities to exist within their agency by using motifs representing the word ‘identity’. I want this collection to raise the visibility of being non-linear and encourage the imagination of how we can reshape the internet to not just be a safe space, but a place to flourish, connect and begin social movements against colonisation. The glitch is never stagnant, and neither are you.
